Fitting a wedding suit - know your measurements

A well fit suit for the wedding day will mean more than just make you look good, it will allow you to be comfortable and relaxed as you won’t be constantly be adjusting and fidgeting in an ill fitting set of clothes. You can look the business and stand out as much as the bride if you follow this wedding suit advice.

Get a perfect fit.

With the official wedding photos, a professional photographer will be able to put you in the best light and you’ll be able to partly get away with a slightly ill fitting suit but in the age of the dreaded camcorder you’ve got no chance. Everyone has one and they’ll be focused on you and your dearly beloved from all angles and at all times. Constantly hitching up baggy trousers just won’t be possible if you don’t want a 100,000 views on You Tube the next morning!

Even if you have limited time until the big day, a good tailor will be able to do those last minute alterations, but it’s best to get it right first time with the correct measurement before buying. The essential measurement required for a good fitting wedding suit are the waist, thighs and inside leg for the trousers and the chest, upper arms and across shoulders for the jacket.

In the modern age of dress down offices, a lot of people are not used to wearing a jacket so often anymore and may not know the correct fit. The big tip here is too make sure that you still have a full range of motion even when the buttons are done right up. With a wedding suit you’re not attending a sit down business meeting. You need to be able to move about, dance and cut that cake with ease. A restrictive jacket wont be much fun.

Trousers should be fine with the measurements taken as stated above but make sure the length is correct with the shoes you’ll be wearing on the day. The length should overlap the instep for an inch down the shoe.

If you are going with a vest make sure it ends at just over the waist of your trousers. This will be important if you take off the jacket, as a poorly fitting vest really looks bad with no jacket and the vest riding up the back.

Try on a few sizes of the same shirt when chosen with the suit and make sure the cuffs don’t ride up under the jacket sleeves when you raise your arms. French cuff shirts will be a little longer in the arm but a button cuff will finish at the wrist. Do that top button up too and make sure it’s not tight.

Now you’re ready for the big day and you can forget about the wedding suit and have fun.

I found this to be very interesting however, I was wondering how often do men wear formal wear? And to what occasion do they dress up? I have found that with limited fashions for men and or colors to choose from it does make thing rather difficult. I do like what you say about proper measurement as this is very important. I'd be interested in hearing more in this regard.
